Get Efficient Legal Help With Tax Debt

Tax Debt Is Not Usually Subject to the Bankruptcy Process

Except for very old tax debt, past-due taxes are not usually eligible for forgiveness via Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Thus, even a person who otherwise qualifies for Chapter 7 bankruptcy may find that even after all other debts are discharged, he or she still owes back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

At the southeastern Michigan law firm of The Shaw Group, P.C., we work with our clients to negotiate directly with the IRS for tax debt relief — in addition to helping with bankruptcy petitions and other debt solutions.

Our law firm is led by seasoned consumer protection lawyer Edward Shaw, who has more than 20 years of experience giving legal representation to Michigan families in serious financial trouble.

If you have questions about tax debt relief, including the relationship between IRS negotiations and a bankruptcy petition, contact our office today for an immediate appointment at one of our four locations: in Ann Arbor, Novi, Livonia or Plymouth.

Offers in Compromise With the IRS

When you owe back taxes to the IRS, the IRS has very strong collection powers. It can be very hard to hide. The IRS can garnish your wages, put a lien on your house or put a levy on personal property.

A much better idea than trying to hide from the IRS is attempting to negotiate a more manageable payment plan.

In IRS terminology, such negotiated payment plans are called "offers in compromise." Sometimes, the IRS will accept a lower payment amount than was originally owed. In other circumstances, the IRS might remove fines or penalties or allow a long-term payment plan.

At The Shaw Group, we have had success negotiating offers in compromise and other types of tax debt relief on behalf of our clients, many of whom also need the services of an experienced bankruptcy attorney.
